Gurugram development body says use of GIS-based map services portal low

GURUGRAM: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA)’s geographic information survey (GIS)-based map services portal isn’t currently getting the kind of footfall that it had hoped for, considering the population of the city, officials said. The authority plans to integrate details of the infrastructure of other departments in the portal, thereby expanding its scope.

GMDA officials said the low traffic on the OneMap portal may be partly due to a lack of awareness about the existence of the facility. “The GIS-based portal is not getting the kind of ‘hits’ we were hoping for, keeping in mind the population of the city. Part of the reason for this may be that people are not aware of this facility being available,” a senior GMDA official said.

GMDA chief Sudhir Rajpal, however, said the focus of the portal at present isn’t residents at all, but government departments. “This portal, in its current form, is meant as more of a database for government departments to use. Citizen-centric services will be developed over time. Right now, we are focusing more on getting departments to use it,”he said.
