Gurugram civic body earmarks two more sites to dump construction waste

GURUGRAM: In order to tackle the problem of construction and demolition (C&D) waste piling up in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has identified two more locations to dump the waste.

The MCG has taken five acres of land on lease in Basai and will also make use of nine acres of its land in Baliawas village for the disposal of C&D waste.

“The C&D waste collection will be door-to-door. We have decided to transfer the C&D waste of zones 1 and 2 to the Basai site and zones 3 and 4 to the Baliawas site,” said Hariom Attri, joint commissioner-headquarter, MCG.

According to the officials, the C&D waste will be picked up from construction sites across the city and transported to these locations for effective disposal. Moreover, the officials have also submitted that there is a need to enhance the capacity of the C&D waste plant.

“A challan to the tune of Rs 10,000 will be issued to anyone illegally dumping C&D waste. The contract of the company issuing challans earlier has been extended,” said Sunder Sheoran, executive engineer, MCG.

The MCG recently conducted a probe against its concessionaire for the Basai C&D waste plant and found that the company operating it had completely sublet its work to a third party, violating the norms of its agreement with the civic body. It was also found in the probe that the third-party was illegally charging people for waste collection and transportation on the behalf of MCG without authorisation.

The report stated that the concessionaire also gave other responsibilities related to the management and handling of the plant to the third-party, which is a violation of the agreement. MCG, in its report, had said they were not informed about the agreement and no written permission was sought from the civic body, which is also a violation of the agreement.
