Chandigarh civic body sends 1,000 notices to property tax defaulters

CHANDIGARH: The start of the third quarter of the financial year has spurred the municipal corporation (MC) to tighten the noose on property tax defaulters, sending over 1,000 notices to
defaulters of both commercial and residential properties. Although some people have been depositing the tax — the MC has earned over Rs 45 crore — the number of the defaulters is large. The authority has already sealed 15 commercial properties across the city. Some of these properties had been opened after payment of tax.

“Sealing is the last option for us. We giving ample time and multiple notices to we opened the seal. Since we have over five months with us, we are optimistic of
getting more tax and are also hopeful of the defaulters paying their dues,” said sources in the MC. In the coming days, more properties would be sealed that have been identified, said sources.

During rebate period from April to June, the MC had had received Rs 36.06 crore tax — the larger share coming from commercial properties. Out of 1.20 lakh
taxpayers, 80,000 have paid their tax. Defaulters are paying 25% penalty and12% interest on the dues. While most taxpayers come from residential segment, the tax for commercial properties is higher.
